Caroline and Jamie are getting married at Aurora Farms in the Upstate, but for their engagement photos they wanted something that captured the beauty and openness of the Charleston coast. We decided on Sullivan’s Island, and it could not have been a more perfect setting for their engagement session!
If you’re considering engagement photos in the Charleston area, Sullivan’s Island is one of my favorite locations for a few key reasons: from the incredible sense of space to the unique feeling beach sessions create.

The Vastness of Sullivan’s Island Makes Photos Feel Cinematic
One of the most striking things about engagement photos at Sullivan’s Island is the sense of openness.
Unlike many portrait locations where backgrounds can feel busy or crowded, Sullivan’s Island offers wide stretches of shoreline, soft dunes, and endless sky. This creates photos that feel expansive and cinematic.
For Caroline and Jamie’s session, the open beach allowed us to capture both intimate close moments and wide landscape shots that highlight just how beautiful the Charleston coast is.
The result is engagement photos that feel both romantic and adventurous at the same time.

Wearing Clothes With Movement Makes Beach Photos Even Better
One thing I always recommend for beach engagement sessions is choosing outfits that have a little bit of flow.
Light dresses, linen shirts, and fabrics that move in the breeze photograph beautifully on the beach. The wind and motion add a natural, effortless feeling to the images.
Both Caroline and Jamie chose an outfit with soft movement, and it worked perfectly with the ocean breeze. Small details like this can make a huge difference in how your photos look and feel: see how Caroline’s dress allowed for that pretty candid movement with choosing a dress with some flow.
When planning engagement photos on Sullivan’s Island, outfits that are comfortable, natural, and slightly flowy tend to photograph best!

Why Sullivan’s Island Is One of the Best Places for Engagement Photos Near Charleston
The Charleston area has so many incredible engagement photo locations, but Sullivan’s Island stands out for a few reasons.
It’s peaceful and less crowded than some other beaches near Charleston. That makes sessions feel relaxed and unhurried.
Second, the scenery is beautifully simple. The dunes, sea grass, shoreline, and pastel sunsets create a timeless coastal backdrop that never goes out of style.
And finally, the light here is incredible. Sunset sessions at Sullivan’s Island create soft, glowing tones that photograph beautifully.
For couples looking for natural, romantic engagement photos in the Charleston area, Sullivan’s Island is always one of my top recommendations.

One of the things that makes engagement photos at Sullivan’s Island so fun is that you never quite know what little moments the beach might bring.
During Caroline and Jamie’s session, walking along turned into a picturesque shot of both of them running into the water: the birds scattering and flying around them!
Moments like this are one of the reasons I love beach engagement sessions so much. The beach is constantly moving and alive — from shorebirds running along the sand to dolphins occasionally appearing offshore. Those little unexpected moments often end up becoming some of the most memorable photos from a session!
For Caroline and Jamie, the seagulls added a playful energy to the evening and created photos that feel completely natural and full of life.

Why Beach Engagement Sessions Feel So Unique
Beach engagement sessions have a completely different energy compared to other photo locations. There’s something about the ocean, the breeze, and the sound of the waves that helps couples relax and just enjoy being together.
Instead of feeling posed or stiff, beach sessions often feel more like a walk together, which creates genuine moments that photograph beautifully. If you love the candid and open feel, beach photos may be for you!
For Caroline and Jamie, Sullivan’s Island gave them the space to move, laugh, and simply enjoy the experience together!

Between the open shoreline, stunning light, and relaxed atmosphere, it’s one of the best places to create engagement photos that feel natural, timeless, and uniquely coastal.
Caroline and Jamie’s session was the perfect reminder of why this location is such a favorite. C & J, we can’t wait to celebrate you this July at Aurora farms!
