If you’re planning a photoshoot in Greenville, SC — whether it’s a couples session, engagement, family photos, or an elopement — choosing the right time of year makes a huge difference for the kind of photos you are looking for. Greenville has four beautiful seasons, each with their own colors, lighting, and personality!
As a Greenville photographer, here’s my every-2-months breakdown of the best times to take photos, how the light changes, and where the scenery really shine best!
January–February
Crisp Light, Bare Trees & Moody Winter Tones
Greenville winters are soft, quiet, and surprisingly photogenic. The sun stays low, which means dreamy golden hour light throughout many parts of the day.
What the photos look like: clean tones, minimal scenery, winter skies, comfy sweaters.
Best locations:
- Falls Park & Liberty Bridge
- Downtown Greenville
- Furman University
Best time of day:
Golden hour around 4:45–6:00 pm
Why choose Jan–Feb:
- Dramatic skies after cold fronts
- Light is softer, Outfits cozier
- Fewer crowds everywhere

March–April
Blooms, Pastels & Bright Greens
Spring is one of the best seasons for portraits in Greenville. Flowers begin blooming in March, and everything feels so airy and fresh. The Upstate is full of forests: those bright greens coming in make for light and crispy spring photos!
What the photos look like: soft greens, pinks, whites, pastel tones.

Summer starts early in the Upstate — by late May, everything is bold, green, and glowing.
What the photos look like: bright, vibrant, golden.

- Paris Mountain Lake
- Furman University (peak at rose gardens!)
- Downtown riverwalk
- Open fields + meadows
- Rooftops
- Conestee Nature Preserve
- Falls Park, Greenville
Best time of day:
Golden hour 7:45–8:45 pm
Why choose May–Jun:
- Longest golden hours of the year
- Perfect for couples + adventure sessions
- Great for open-field sunset photos
- Last stretch before the heat of summer
July–August
Warm Tones, Water Shoots & Dramatic Skies
Summer in Greenville is hot — but also stunning. Evening storms clear for fiery sunsets, and water locations are at their best. We all know the daytime can be very warm, but we also know the nights cool to a perfect “no-temp” feel. That is the best time for your photos!
What the photos look like: strong sun, bold color, warm haze, tropical looking greens.

September–October
Perfect Weather, Peak Photo Season, & A Taste of Fall
Greenville’s fall color peaks a bit later than the mountains, which means bright oranges and golds up up north in September and long lasting reds, yellows, and oranges through all of October in the Upstate.
What the photos look like: warm, colorful, multi-toned leaves, cozy fall vibes.

- Furman University (Late October at Furman is stunning!)

November–December
Fiery Leaves, Cozy Outfits & Moody Light
Late fall blends right into winter, giving Greenville a gorgeous mix of deep reds, pine greens, and soft skies.
What the photos look like: warm woods, winter neutrals, holiday color.

- Furman University (Early November is best)
- Campbell’s Covered Bridge
- Table Rock Visitor Center
- Downtown Greenville (holiday decor & lights)

Golden hour 4:45–5:30 pm
Why choose Nov–Dec:
- Peak color early November
- Dreamy overcast portraits
- Magical downtown lights in December
- Less Busy than Sep/Oct
Final Tips for Booking Your Greenville Photo Session
- Golden hour is always best — no matter the season.
- Decide the vibe you want (lush greens? fall color? winter minimalism?).
- Weekdays = fewer crowds and cleaner backgrounds.
- Sunrise is less busy, underrated, and SO beautiful in Greenville.
- Book early for fall — it fills faster than any other season.
