Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most magical experiences. Those tiny fingers, the delicate yawns, and the little toes you want to kiss forever—these moments fly by so quickly. That’s why newborn photography sessions are so, so special. My goal is not just to take pictures, but to capture the love, warmth, and precious details of your baby safely and tenderly. From the small nursery details to the tiny hands and feet: here’s everything you need to know about newborn sessions plus tips and tricks to make the experience smooth, fun, and a special time between you and your family!

1. When to Book Your Newborn Session

Timing is everything. I recommend scheduling your newborn session within the first 10–14 days after birth. During this period, babies are naturally sleepy and flexible, which makes it easier to capture those curled-up poses, tiny details, and serene expressions.

Tip: You can always book your session before your baby arrives. This way, you can relax and focus on welcoming your little one without the stress of last-minute planning. If you miss the early stages, don’t miss out on the sweet first months either! Those are still great times to book photos of your little one!

2. How Long a Session Takes

We never want to rush a newborn session—these photos are about capturing calm, safe, and natural moments. Sessions usually last 1-2 hours, and they can always be longer depending on your baby’s needs.

Why it takes time:

  • Feeding, burping, and diaper changes
  • Helping your baby fall asleep for cozy poses
  • Adjusting lighting, wraps, and props safely
  • Breaks are needed for the little one! Time ensures breaks are planned and embraced.

Patience is key. I promise, the extra time ensures that every image is perfect: when you and your family are comfortable, that’s when the photos become authentic, documentary, and natural.

3. What to Wear

It sounds funny, but what you and your family wear can make a big difference in the timeless quality of your photos!

  • Neutral colors (whites, creams, soft pastels, grays) look beautiful on camera.
  • Avoid logos or busy patterns that can distract from your baby.
  • Coordinate, don’t match too much—soft, complementary colors create a cohesive look without being too “matchy-matchy.”

All our newborn sessions are in your own home: this allows me to capture you authentically in your comfort space, surrounded by all the baby’s sweet stuffies or books or room details. So, feel free to have different outfits for baby on hand as we’ll be in your home during the session!

4. Safety Is Always My Top Priority

Your baby’s safety is always number one concern. Every pose, prop, and setup is done with the utmost care:

  • Never force a pose: we will always work with your baby’s comfort and natural sleep cycles.
  • Soft, stable props only: we’ll use their in-home blankets, crib, and comfy spots for safe photos.
  • Constant supervision: I handle your baby carefully and adjust poses safely. You’ll be with me the whole time watching little one get their newborn photos done! We’ll be doing it all together.

You can relax knowing your little one is loved on every second of the session!

5. Tips for a Smooth Session

  • Feed your baby right before the session so they’re calm and sleepy.
  • Have extra diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes ready on hand—we want comfort to come first.
  • Keep siblings engaged with toys, snacks, or an extra pair of hands.
  • Relax—your baby feels your energy. Calm parents = calm baby!

These little steps make a huge difference in creating a peaceful, stress-free session!

6. Types of Newborn Photos

Newborn sessions can include a variety of shots to capture your family’s story:

  1. Posed newborn portraits – classic wrapped or lightly clothed poses highlighting tiny details
  2. Family and sibling shots – capturing the love and connection between parents, siblings, and baby
  3. Lifestyle shots – natural moments in your home environment, showing real life
  4. Detail shots – hands, toes, eyelashes, lips, and all the little things that make your baby unique

Tip: Talk with me before the session about your favorite styles so I can create the gallery you’ve dreamed of. I always encourage looking through inspiration/Pinterest and sending me everything y’all love!

7. After the Session

Once we’ve captured all those magical moments, I carefully edit each photo, enhancing the natural beauty of your newborn while keeping it authentic. Most families receive their images within 3–6 weeks, depending on the session size and style.

Many parents love to create albums, wall art, or prints to preserve these fleeting moments. Trust me—these memories are treasures that will last a lifetime.

Newborn photography is more than pictures—it’s a way to freeze fleeting moments, honor the love in your family, and celebrate the miracle of life. My approach is always:

  • Patient – we follow your baby’s lead
  • Gentle – every movement is careful and intentional
  • Caring – your baby’s comfort and safety come first
  • Personalized – each session is tailored to your family’s story

If you’re ready to capture the soft snuggles, tiny toes, and first cuddles in a safe and loving environment, let’s create memories you’ll treasure forever!
